Terms
- Cash and cash equivalents, closing balance: Cash on hand and in bank accounts, plus deposits that can be withdrawn at short notice without loss of value.
- Current liabilities, closing balance: Obligations due within a year: trade payables, short-term borrowings, tax and payroll liabilities, accruals.
- Short-term investments, closing balance: Marketable securities and deposits held for less than a year that are not cash equivalents.
- Trade receivables, closing balance: Amounts customers owe for goods and services already invoiced.
Result
Quick Ratio is a ratio. Higher is better.
Target
Rule of thumb: at least 1.
Below 1, paying current liabilities on time depends on turning inventory into sales.
Quick Ratio pitfalls
- Receivables count at face value. If a large share is overdue, the ratio overstates liquidity; read it next to DSO and the receivables ageing.
- Prepaid expenses are current assets but are left out here, because they never turn into cash.
