Basic Earning Power (BEP)

Earnings before interest and taxes per unit of assets: the earning power of the assets before financing and tax decisions enter.

Profitability

Basic Earning Power formula

\[ \dfrac{\text{EBIT}}{\text{Average total assets}} \]

Comparing it with return on assets shows how much interest and tax take away.

Terms

  • EBIT, period total: Earnings before interest and taxes: operating profit plus other income and expenses such as investment income and currency results. It is the profit available to pay lenders, the state and owners.
  • Total assets, average of opening and closing: Everything the company owns or controls: non-current plus current assets.

Result

Basic Earning Power is a percentage. Higher is better.

Target

There is no general target; compare with the company’s own history and with peers in the same industry.
